Beauty and the Beast (DVD + Blu-ray, with DVD Packaging) (Brand:Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment)
The film that officially signalled Disney's animation renaissance
(following The Little Mermaid) and the only animated feature to
receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination, Beauty and the Beast remains
the yardstick by which all other animated films should be measured. It
relates the story of Belle, a bookworm with a dotty inventor for a
father; when he inadvertently offends the Beast (a prince whose heart
is too hard to love anyone besides himself), Belle boldly takes her
father's place, imprisoned in the Beast's gloomy mansion. Naturally,
Belle teaches the Beast to love. What makes this such a dazzler,
besides the amazingly accomplished animation and the winning coterie
of supporting characters (the Beast's mansion is overrun by quipping,
dancing household items) is the array of beautiful and hilarious songs
by composer Alan Menken and the late, lamented lyricist Howard Ashman.
(The title song won the 1991 Best Song Oscar, and Menken's score
scored a trophy as well.) The downright funniest song is "Gaston," a
lout's paean to himself (including the immortal line, "I use antlers
in all of my de-co-ra-ting"). "Be Our Guest" is transformed into an
inspired Busby Berkeley homage. Since Ashman's passing, animated
musicals haven't quite reached the same exhilarating level of wit,
sophistication, and pure joy. --David Kronke --This text refers to an
out of print or unavailable edition of this title....

Beauty and the Beast (Blu-ray + DVD, with Blu-ray Packaging) (Brand:Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment)
Some would put forward an argument that Beauty and the Beast is the
finest Disney animated movie to date. And, in truth, it’s a tricky
one to fight. Not only was this the first animated film to be rewarded
with a Best Picture Oscar nomination, it remains a quite brilliant
piece of filmmaking, that’s utterly endured the test of time.
There’s plenty that sets Beauty and the Beast apart from most, too.
Take the exquisite characterisation, the ultra-tight script or the
confident direction, for starters. Then throw in some astounding
strong songs and music, from Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, and put at
the heart of it all a love story utterly worth rooting for from start
to finish. It’s a mesmeric film at best, not least in the
rightly-famed ballroom sequence, and it’s very much Disney at the
absolute height of its powers. Fortunately, the Blu-ray is a flat-out
love letter to the film. Packed with fascinating extra features,
offering something for viewers of all ages, it’s a insightful look
behind the film, and offers the kind of quality supplements you
can’t help but wish all films could match. Add in the 1080p picture
presentation, and Beauty and the Beast on Blu-ray adds up to an
unmissable family treat. An outstanding package. --Jon Foster...

Mamma Mia! [DVD] [2008] (Brand:Universal Pictures UK)
The delirious sight of Meryl Streep leading a river of
multigenerational women singing "Dancing Queen" is one of the high
points of Mamma Mia!, the musical built around the songs of the hugely
popular pop group ABBA. The plot sets in motion when Sophie (Amanda
Seyfried, Mean Girls), daughter of Donna (Streep), sends a letter to
three men, inviting them to her wedding--because after reading her
mother's diary, she suspects that one of them is her father. When all
three arrive at the Greek island where Donna runs a hotel, Donna flips
out and finds that passions she thought she'd laid aside are coming
back to life. But let's face it, the plot is not the point--it's a
ridiculous contrivance that provides an excuse for the characters to
sing the massive hits of ABBA. Regrettably, first-time film director
Phyllida Lloyd (who directed the original stage production) has drawn
over-the-top performances from everyone involved, even Streep; every
production number hammers its exuberance into your eyeballs. Which is
too bad, because Mamma Mia! is a rarity: A middle-aged love story. The
kids start things off, but the story is really about Streep and the
three guys (former James Bond Pierce Brosnan, former Mr. Darcy Colin
Firth, and Swedish star Stellan Skarsgard), as well as Donna's best
friends (Christine Baranski, best known from the TV show Cybill, and
Julie Walters, Calendar Girls). It's a romantic comedy aimed at the
people who were around when all these songs were new, and that's an
age group Hollywood largely ignores. For that alone, Mamma Mia!
deserves to find an audience. --Bret Fetzer...

Mary Poppins [DVD] [1964] (Brand:Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm)
There is only one word that comes close to accurately describing the
enchanting Mary Poppins, and that term was coined by the movie itself:
supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Even at 2 hours and 20 minutes,
Disney's pioneering mixture of live action and animation (based on the
books by P.L. Travers) still holds kids spellbound. Julie Andrews won
an Oscar as the world's most magically idealized nanny ("practically
perfect in every way," and complete with lighter-than-air umbrella),
and Dick Van Dyke is her clownishly charming beau, Bert the chimney
sweep. The songs are also terrific, ranging from bright and cheery ("A
Spoonful of Sugar") to dark and cheery (the Oscar-winning "Chim-Chim
Cheree") to touchingly melancholy ("Feed the Birds"). Many consider
Mary Poppins to be the crowning achievement of Walt Disney's
career--and it was the only one of his features to be nominated for a
best picture Academy Award until Beauty and the Beast in 1991. --Jim
