Time Out
(Brand:Sony Jazz)
Boasting the first jazz instrumental to sell a million copies, thePaul Desmond-penned "Take Five", Time Out captures the celebrated jazz
quartet at the height of both its popularity and its powers. Recorded
in 1959, the album combines superb performances by pianist Brubeck,
alto saxophonist Desmond, drummer Joe Morrello and bassist Gene
Wright. Along with "Take Five", the album features another one of the
group's signature compositions, "Blue Rondo a la Turk". Though
influenced by the West Coast-cool school, Brubeck's greatest interest
and contribution to jazz was the use of irregular meters in
composition, which he did with great flair. Much of the band's appeal
is due to Desmond, whose airy tone and fluid attack often carried the
band's already strong performances to another level. Together, he and
Brubeck proved one of the most potent pairings of the era. --Fred

It's Time
(Brand:143 Records/Reprise)
Michael Buble's assured debut and the tireless year of globe-trottingtouring he spent promoting it elevated the 20-something Vancouver
native into the first rank of pop crooner revivalists. His sophomore
studio follow-up largely turns on the same formula that helped make
his considerable vocal prowess so attractive to mainstream audiences,
mixing the nigh flawless, if expected Sinatra-channelling ("I've Got
You Under My Skin") with more playful and inviting renditions of pop
standards like the Gershwin's "A Foggy Day in London Town," "Feeling
Good," "Try A Little Tenderness" and Cole Porter's "I've Got You Under
My Skin." But it's the eclectic mix of more contemporary material the
singer seasons them with--apt tribute to Buble hero Bobby Darin--that
keeps him walking the narrow tightrope between artistic intrigue (a
blues-tinged vamp of Holland-Dozier-Holland's "How Sweet It Is," Leon
Russell's lovely "Song For You," with a guest turn by Chris Botti) and
the kitsch-laden abyss ("Quando, Quando, Quando"'s Euro-centric duet
with Nelly Furtado, a ring-a-ding-fling with the Beatles' "Can't Buy
Me Love" that echoes fellow Canadian crooner/rival Matt Dusk's more
successful flirtation with Lennon-McCartney). Arranger/producer Tommy
LiPuma offers Buble a welcome swinging jazz showcase on "The More I
See of You," a bracing respite from the rest of producer David
Foster's slick production. --Jerry McCulley...

The Pursuit
(Brand:Decca)
Now officially anointed as the new Dudley Moore, being a talentedBritish pianist about to wed a much taller blonde, Jamie Cullum
returns after a four year break with The Pursuit, his fifth and best
album yet. A gleeful and deft big band version of Cole Porter’s
classic "Just One Of Those Things" kicks off proceedings with a new
Cullum-composed introduction, an indicator of his current confidence.
And on this evidence it’s warranted. First single, the soft-rocking
"I’m All Over It" deserved greater success, while the jaunty
"Wheels", inspired by the credit crunch, neatly encapsulates the
varied moods of The Pursuit. A funereal reading of "If I Ruled the
World" owing far more to Elvis Costello than Harry Secombe, is
followed by "You and Me Are Gone", a tribute to Louis Prima’s turn
on the soundtrack of The Jungle Book that’s as much fun as its
inspriation. A cover of Rihanna’s hit "Please Don’t Stop The
Music" is as vulnerable and full of longing as the original even as he
makes it his own, yet "Mixtape", a tribute to the varied music Cullum
loves, is an upbeat, even extravagant pop song not miles from Ben
Folds. "We Run Things" is slighter--Cullum can’t really do
threat--but the concluding "Music Is Through", effectively a house
tune anchored by his brother’s stand-up bass, neatly combines
several genres to great effect. The playing is great throughout, the
songs well chosen and arranged, the result entirely satisfying. If
marrying pop and jazz without contrivance was the target, then The
Pursuit has succeeded perfectly.--Steve Jelbert...

The Very Best of Dave Brubeck
(Brand:Sony Jazz)
A generation ago Brubeck was largely dismissed as an unswingingpianist with a vulgar preoccupation with odd time-signatures. Now he
is a senatorial figure whose work is celebrated as much as it used to
be reviled. On this evidence the contemporary view is fair. Brubeck
could be heavy-handed, and some of his 1960s work was undoubtedly
pretentious; on the other hand, he had considerable harmonic
imagination, constantly surprised with his delicate melodiousness, and
could generate prodigious swing. Moreover, in Paul Desmond he enjoyed
the services of a top-class alto saxophonist who was also a deeply
sympathetic spirit. Here they are joined on all but one of the 15
tracks by Brubeck's finest rhythm section, bassist Eugene Wright and
drummer Joe Morello, and the programme, in addition to memorialising
old favourites, includes Brubeck's excellent compositions "The Duke",
"Mr. Broadway" and "In Your Own Sweet Way" and offers intriguing
readings of "Camptown Races" and "Trolley Song". Strongly recommended
to anyone new to Brubeck, the CD will please his dedicated fans too.

Michael Buble
(Brand:143 Records/Reprise)
Pop's rush to raid the cradle continues with this promising,self-titled debut by 25-year-old Canadian singer Michael Bublé. And
while the young vocal star's good looks are smart enough for a boy
band, his muse seems to have sprung from a more sassy and compelling
musical era. Mentored by Paul Anka (whose 1950s hit "Put Your Head on
My Shoulder" is covered in dreamy, cabaret fashion here), Bublé sings
in the orbits of Darin and Sinatra, covering swing epoch gems ("Come
Fly with Me", "The Way You Look Tonight", "That's All") and rock-era
standards (Van Morrison's "Moondance", "How Can You Mend a Broken
Heart" by the Brothers Gibb, Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love")
with equal aplomb. David Foster's production is typically slick and
played to the back row of the bleachers, but it's informed by smart
contexts provided by such arrangers as Johnny Mandel, Randy Waldman
and Mike Melvoin. If the choices of material are sometimes staid and
predictable, they also give the singer a crucial framework for
building toward something more challenging; his is a bright future.
