Corinne Bailey Rae (Brand:EMI)
When soul music is at its finest, a great vocalist can take you along
on a journey into their sadness, loneliness, joy, and passion. When
mixing that voice with horns, harmonies, and a bluesy Hammond organ,
that same music can seamlessly travel across decades. Many new artists
claim to accomplish that feat, but few are sincerely ageless and
timeless: Corinne Bailey Rae has those qualities in spades. Rae--a
newcomer out of Leeds, UK, with a gospel choir history--has created a
self-titled CD that occasionally evokes the feeling of a '70s Bill
Withers classic, while bringing inflections of Zero 7 and Alicia Keys
to her grooves as well. Straight from track one, "Like a Star"
displays a restrained soulfulness that shows her strengths through a
whisper soft melody. Other standout cuts include the breakup-ache of
"Till It Happens To You" and "Choux Pastry Heart," which discloses her
jazz-affected timing and the level of powerful songwriting that she is
capable of at her very best. In a day and age where a good voice alone
can provide you with a golden ticket, it is refreshing to see that Rae
has not only written or cowritten every song on her debut, she also
contributes guitar, bass, keys, and percussion to the tracks. Her
songs have some room to mature, but as a new recording artist in her
mid-20s, so does she. Soul lovers, pass the word: this is one
impressive debut. --Denise Sheppard...

De La's debut represented a new path for hip-hop, a reaction to
conventions that had turned into clichés. It was friendly and playful
enough to cross over to a pop audience (thanks to Prince Paul's
production, which found the funk hiding inside Steely Dan and
"Schoolhouse Rock"), but complicated and tough enough to be hugely
influential in the hip-hop world. Cryptic but ecstatic, and sometimes
sexy (especially the ingenious double-entendre "Buddy"), Trugoy and
Posdnuos's lyrics invented a "new style of speak," dense with
self-invented slang and metaphors. The hits, including "Say No Go" and
"Me Myself And I," are delightful, but the little sketches and
sound-experiments between them make the whole disc flow effortlessly.

A Brit-bred Slim Shady? Another The Streets? He’ll be sold to you as
both and although the Mike Skinner comparison is a lazy untruth, with
his bold debut Plan B (aka Ben Drew) leaves the former trailing in
terms of raw impact. This white boy tale-spinner from East London does
owe an awful lot to Eminem, from the quick-spat-take-that fury of his
microphone style (quasi-American accent to boot), to the bounce of his
backing tracks, to taking the role of participatory narrator,
devil’s advocate and instigator. But every aspect that’s been
neutralised, parodied or packaged to turn Mathers into a one-man
industry is exaggerated and left red-raw here, with an added vulgarity
that must be sending Mary Whitehouse’s obscenity antennas cuckoo as
we speak. "Tough Love" is one of the clearest reasons for the Eminem
comparison, recalling in tragic detail one set of parents’ perverse
sense of discipline and the ensuing death of their daughter. One thing
that sets him apart though is avoiding the solely self-referential
cataloguing of his own existence, instead seeing the wider world and
all of its wounds from his perspective. It’s no mistake that he
sounds like he’s stolen Zack de la Rocha’s tongue in "No More
Eatin". But this is no international project – in his own words, his
style is "like Little Mo getting raped and keeping the baby instead of
getting it aborted". The only thing that should stop this from going
supanova is not having Dr Dre on speed-dial and Radio 1 not owning a
durable enough bleep-machine. --James Berry...
