Only by the Night (Brand:RCA Records)

Already on course to be one of the year's biggest sellers, Only By the
Night has sealed Kings of Leon's unlikely position as Britain's
favourite American rock band. The Followill brothers (and cousin) have
always been tagged as part of a southern rock tradition of family
bands such as the Allmans and Lynyrd Skynyrd, a label they vehemently
refuted. But the skinny lads certainly looked like a classic rock act,
even as they took musical inspiration from indie contemporaries The
Strokes and eighties new wave acts such as The Cure and New Order.
Only By the Night is effectively a sequel to 2006's terrific Because
of the Times, their third record and the first where they nailed their
own sound, a striking amalgam of bluesy vocals and post-punk
primitivism. In comparison Only By the Night consolidates rather than
advances their style. The appropriately incoherent "Sex on Fire",
already a chart topping single, is catchy but sounds lightweight next
to songs like the fierce "Crawl" and the stadia-ready "Cold Desert"
and "Manhattan". The dissonant, almost amateurish "17" is most out of
place, though Caleb Followill still bawls it with the same passion he
brings to even the clumsiest couplet. More notable are several sparse
romantic pleas that often borrow licks from classic Southern soul. The
yearning "I Want You" is little more than its title, but it certainly
convinces, while "Revelry" and the vulnerable "Use Somebody" show
signs of impending maturity. Only By the Night's simplicity certainly

Lungs (Brand:Island Records Group)

Already the year’s most hyped new artist--not only first in the
BBC’s famously unreliable poll of new talent and recipient of a
special Brit award devised just for her--Florence Welsh has a lot to
live up to, and thankfully the artfully titled and sleeved Lungs
justifies the investment. The singles are undeniably the standouts.
The impressive "Dog Days Are Over", neurotic and fierce, and the
slightly more reserved follow-up "Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)" lead her
debut collection, sometimes overshadowing her other material. Yet the
extremes of "Kiss With A Fist", a jokey celebration of mutual domestic
violence and noisy guitars that shamelessly steals its melody from the
White Stripes’ charming "We Are Gonna Be Friends", and the
showstopping, almost unashamedly stagy "Girl With One Eye" show off
both her development and an already instantly recognisable voice. The
gallows humour of songs like "Between Two Lungs", the daft "My Boy
Builds Coffins" and the ferocious "Hurricane Drunk" where she
threatens "I’m gonna drink myself to death" backed by a spirited
choir of Florences, save her from accusations of self-absorption. The
concluding, and hugely loud "Blinding" is all Kate Bush tics over
bruising drum patterns. So a straightforward and affectionate cover of
the classic Candi Staton and Source club banger "You’ve Got The
Love", previously only available online, comes as a welcome chance to
get one’s breath back. Much better than an apparent plan to position
her as some kind of missing link between PJ Harvey and Avril Lavigne
suggested, Lungs is a clever, catchy set, yet unresolved enough to

Only Revolutions (Brand:14th Floor Records)

Only Revolutions, the fifth long-player from Biffy Clyro, is a far cry
from this Ayr trio’s earlier, reliably embittered emissions. Long
gone is the abrasive post-grunge that characterised albums like
2002’s The Vertigo Of Bliss, replaced by polished production,
uplifting melodies and a grand, orchestral palette. This doesn’t
meant Biffy have succumbed to the sort of blanding out that afflicts
so many bands that clean up their act, though--indeed, in many ways
they’ve become a more complex, idiosyncratic musical force, touting
big anthems laced with creative eccentricity. The likes of "The Golden
Rule" and "Born On A Horse" take their cue from Muse, fitting up songs
with progressive twists and turns, not to mention some curiously
elliptical wordplay. "I pronounce it aluminium/'Cause there’s an I
next to the U and M", spits Simon Neil on the latter, over an offbeat
keyboard groove. Elsewhere, "The Golden Rule" hitches hectic riffage
and gang vocals to an unashamedly epic symphonic outro, while "Shock
Shock" channels relationship angst into something cosmically
terrifying: "You scratch and you scratch 'til your face comes away,
replaced by a hole or a vortex", sings Neil, over an bracing barrage
