The A-Team [DVD] (Brand:20th Century Fox Home Entertainment)
Give it up to the A-Team: they've always been good at demolishing
things in big, big ways. Freed from the confines of the 1980s TV
series, the 2010 blockbuster movie version allows the four members of
the paramilitary squad to really amp up the mayhem to newly crazed
heights. Liam Neeson plays team leader Hannibal Smith (inheriting the
cigar-chomping from the show's George Peppard), and pro wrestler
Quinton "Rampage" Jackson is "B.A." Baracus, the TV show's most iconic
character (insert Mr. T "I pity the fool" joke here). As the vain
Face, Bradley Cooper preens in convincing fashion, and District 9
out-of-nowhere star Sharlto Copley plays the unhinged pilot "Howlin'
Mad" Murdock. These boys are on the trail of some money-counterfeiting
plates, from Bagdad to Germany to places in between. It would be
understating it to say that the plot is not of primary importance,
although Patrick Wilson has some fun as a CIA official and Jessica
Biel occasionally strikes poses as Face's ex-flame, now a military
officer displeased with the A-Team's extra-legal shenanigans. The
storytelling is insipid and half-hearted--but when it comes to snarky
dialogue and two-fisted action scenes, director Joe Carnahan is in his
comfort zone. It's reasonably fun watching the working-out of such
logistical puzzles as dropping a tank (with crew inside) from a plane,
or scattering the main characters on a dockside as cargo containers
rain down from a ship looming above them. Good times, although is it
asking too much for certain basic laws of physics (if you drop a human
body ten stories, for instance, it might actually sustain injuries) to
be used as a guideline? But worrying about such matters isn't in the
spirit of The A-Team, which cheerfully ignores the petty concerns of
credibility and logic. --Robert Horton...

You get six films for your money here, as the Harry Potter franchise
takes our bespectacled young wizard from his early days at Hogwarts,
through to some of his darkest. And it’s wonderful to look back and
see just how far the character, and the films, have come. The weakest
Harry Potter films are arguably the first two, but even these are
really good family entertainment. Sure, they rely a little too much on
the novelty factor, and they lack some of the edge of the later films,
but they’re fine in their own right. The cinematic franchise only
really kicked firmly into life though with Harry Potter and the
Prisoner of Azkaban, a far darker, visually striking film that sets a
tone and course that the subsequent films wisely follow. Harry Potter
and the Goblet Of Fire thus manages to pack a tremendous amount into
its running time, before handing things over to the outstanding Harry
Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. And this box set then leaves us
at the eve of the ultimate showdown in the Harry Potter saga with the
brooding Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Different people,
clearly, have different views on which their favourite Harry Potter
film is. But it’s hard to argue that this is a compelling, quality
collection of family films, each of which benefits generously from
high definition presentation. Expect each disc here to be spun many,
many times in the years ahead… --Jon Foster...

Iron Man 2 [DVD] (Brand:Paramount Home Entertainment)
The return of Tony Stark, in the guise of Robert Downey Jr, in Iron
Man 2 proves to be a welcome one. For Downey Jr utterly owns the dual
role of Stark and Iron Man, and in this entertaining superhero sequel,
he’s given a tricky nemesis to fight. The foe is Mickey Rourke’s
Ivan Vanko, introduced properly in a staggering action sequence set at
Historic Grand Prix of Monaco. Director Jon Favreau stages this
superbly, and Iron Man 2 manages to pack plenty into its opening 40
minutes as a result. The foot does go off the gas, though, in the
middle part of the film, when Iron Man 2 does get bogged down by a few
too many characters and plot points. But there’s regularly something
to keep the attention up, before all bets are off for the entertaining
finale. Iron Man 2 may not be a perfect sequel, but it’s certainly a
good one. And it’s a thorough and rigorous home cinema workout, too.
Boasting spectacular visuals and a thunderous surround sound mix, the
Blu-ray edition of the film is a thrilling ride, and the best way to
enjoy an already-worthwhile movie. --Jon Foster...

The Karate Kid [2010] [DVD] (Brand:Sony Pictures Home Ent. UK)
A remake of the 1984 film of the same name, The Karate Kid well
exceeds expectations, delivering a powerful viewing experience filled
with action-packed martial arts scenes, great footage of China and its
many wonders, and an absorbing story of a preadolescent boy's struggle
to find his own inner strength. The title Karate Kid is really a
misnomer as it is the art of kung fu that is practiced in this remake,
not karate, and other details, including the film's setting in China,
also differ from the original film. What remains the same, and just as
powerful, is the underlying story: a young boy moves to a new place
where he feels isolated and is bullied by his peers. Through an
unlikely relationship with an adult, the boy not only learns to
protect himself through martial arts, but develops the much more
important qualities of respect and the mastery of one's own mind and
body. Relative newcomer Jaden Smith (son of actors and producers Will
Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith) is excellent as the main character Dre
Parker; Jackie Chan gives a restrained and highly effective
performance as his mentor Mr. Han; and Zhenwei Wang is eerily
believable as the bully Chen. This is an intense and often violent
film that fully engulfs its viewers--be prepared to gasp and cheer out
loud, and know that you may never look at the act of putting on and
taking off a jacket in the same way again.--Tami Horiuchi...

Avatar Extended Collector's Edition [DVD] (Brand:20th Century Fox Home Entertainment)
After 12 years of thinking about it (and waiting for movie technology
to catch up with his visions), James Cameron followed up his
unsinkable Titanic with Avatar, a sci-fi epic meant to trump all
previous sci-fi epics. Set in the future on a distant planet, Avatar
spins a simple little parable about greedy colonizers (that would be
mankind) messing up the lush tribal world of Pandora. A paraplegic
Marine named Jake (Sam Worthington) acts through a 9-foot-tall avatar
that allows him to roam the planet and pass as one of the Na'vi, the
blue-skinned, large-eyed native people who would very much like to
live their peaceful lives without the interference of the visitors.
Although he's supposed to be gathering intel for the badass general
(Stephen Lang) who'd like to lay waste to the planet and its
inhabitants, Jake naturally begins to take a liking to the Na'vi,
especially the feisty Neytiri (Zoë Saldana, whose entire performance,
recorded by Cameron's complicated motion-capture system, exists as a
digitally rendered Na'vi). The movie uses state-of-the-art 3D
technology to plunge the viewer deep into Cameron's crazy toy box of
planetary ecosystems and high-tech machinery. Maybe it's the fact that
Cameron seems torn between his two loves--awesome destructive gizmos
and flower-power message mongering--that makes Avatar's pursuit of its
point ultimately uncertain. That, and the fact that Cameron's dialogue
continues to clunk badly. If you're won over by the movie's trippy new
world, the characters will be forgivable as broad, useful archetypes
rather than standard-issue stereotypes, and you might be able to
overlook the unsurprising central plot. (The overextended "take that,
Michael Bay" final battle sequences could tax even Cameron
enthusiasts, however.) It doesn't measure up to the hype (what could?)
yet Avatar frequently hits a giddy delirium all its own. The film
itself is our Pandora, a sensation-saturated universe only the movies
could create. --Robert Horton...

The Sorcerer's Apprentice [DVD] [2010] (Brand:Walt Disney Home Entertainment)
Who doesn't wish they could unleash fire from their fingertips and
make mops come to life? The Sorcerer's Apprentice enjoyably captures
this fantasy as a young physics student named Dave (Jay Baruchel,
She's Out of My League) learns that he's the inheritor of the powers
of Merlin--and suddenly finds himself in the middle of a war between
two of Merlin's protégés, Balthazar (Nicolas Cage) and Horvath
(Alfred Molina, Spider-Man 2). The Sorcerer's Apprentice is a
special-effects blockbuster--but it's a pretty good one, not reaching
the charmed heights of Pirates of the Caribbean but so much better
than Prince of Persia. It runs out of air toward the end, but before
that it's jauntily entertaining, with capable dialogue, clever
curlicues of plot, and most importantly delightful performances: Cage
maintains a light touch, with enough eccentricity to be interesting
but not so much that it derails the momentum; Baruchel continues his
nerdy hero streak; supporting performances from Toby Kebbell
(RocknRolla) and Alice Krige (best known as the Borg Queen from Star
Trek) are comic and creepy respectively; Monica Bellucci (Shoot 'Em
Up) and Teresa Palmer (Bedtime Stories) are mostly eye-candy but
likable nonetheless; and Molina, as ever, is the best thing in the
movie, playing silky villainy with effortless aplomb. All in all, good
fun. --Bret Fetzer...
